Choose a domain name

Domain name is how people find your site. This sites domain name is aatrax.net. Pick the name you'd like to use and check to see if it's already in use. You can do this in several places. I like to use godaddy.com for registering domain names. They are inexpensive and good at what they do. They are also the worlds largest host name provider.

Hosting your site

Before you go “live” on the Internet you'll need a place to put your web site. It's called “hosting” and there are several companies that want to do this for you. Even some of them are free but this one time I don't recommend using the free hosting. Hosting is very inexpensive and offers many advantages over the free hosting sites. For one thing, your site will rank better using a paid hosting company. Again, I like to use godaddy.com but there are lots of choices. Just google web hosting and you'll see millions companies that provide hosting services. Todays search landed 188,000,000 hits!

Publishing your site

Don't worry, it's not as hard as it sounds, and guess what? I'm going to show you where to get the tools to do it for free.

You will need a good FTP client. I use FileZilla. It works great and it's free. FTP clients provide you with a link between your PC and your Internet website. This link allows you to move files to your website or from your website. You can build and update your web pages on your PC, view them in your web browser and when you are satisfied you can upload them (publish) to your website so the whole Internet world can see them.

You can get FileZilla at http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/. It's a simple program to use.

Once you have published your pages you should be able to view them on line. Remember, the rest of the Internet world can view them now too!

Well, you're on the internet. It wasn't as hard as you imagined. I hope this short presentation has helped you in some way. If you are like me, you are now hooked and will spend countless hours improving your site and maybe even developing another site or two.
